I deleted the avutil-50.dll from c:\windows and the issue went away.

I started getting this with Chrome 5.0.342.8 on Windows 7 x64:
I deleted the avutil-50.dll from c:\windows and the issue went away.

me and lots of people i know started getting this problem and we found out that it had something to do with the screen saver "electric sheep" If you have it, un install it and the problem should be fixed instantly.

simple renaming without restart did the same effect.
sheep still runs fine on windows xp sp3.
don't forget to uninstall old sheep versions before update.
Darn ElectricSheep!! Uninstalled ES and everything's OK now. Weird.
